Overview

Department of Mechanical Engineering at PESIT was established in the year 1988. The department has an aggressive academic rigor in the autonomous program with a high quality curriculum.
The Department of Mechanaical Engineering offers Master’s degree in Automotive Engineering under Visvesvaraya Technological University. The department has highly qualified experts from both the academia and the industry with vast research and engineering experience. This helps offer high end courses, work on cutting edge technologies along with a curriculum that would help the students get ready for their professional career, be it the industry or academics.
The department is also setting up a research centre dedicated to automotive and aerospace researchand engineering now under the domain CARE (Center for Automobile Research and Engineering) and well facilitated computer labs with the most latest of hardware and software in line with industry requirements. The department has collaborative research relationships with many internationally reputed companies such as General Motors, Mann Hummel, Triveni, EKO, GE to name a few. The department is now expanding especially in the automotive domain to work on cutting edge research and technologies of electric and hybrid vehicles. The department also has high profile faculty who have joined from the Automotive and Aerospace industry with an average of greater than 25 years of experience. The department very soon is working to offer a Master’s degree in Aerospace engineering.
Sufficient class rooms and systems are provided for students use. The department also boasts of PACE – a one of its kind partnership that General Motors has with a few selected institutes in south east Asia. The department also hosts the Auto and Aero clubs and has a very active SAE students chapter. The students have won accolades by participating in national and international events.
The department has innumerable books to cater to the students, faculty and research. The department also has on-line access to most of all international journals. The faculty have authored scholarly papers in leading journals, are key note speakers in international conferences and organize international conferences and symposia. The department also has a wind and a water tunnel facility along with all the mechanical labs, workshops and related infra structure to be used by the faculty and students.
In addition the department offers specific training to industry, students and faculty on a timely basis.
In all, the department offers the best environment for Master’s and Ph.D students to pursue research in the field of their interest in Automotive and Aerospace engineering and research. Main fields of activity are in computational mechanics (CAE and CFD including computational bio-mechanics), automotive and aero space design and engineering, electric and hybrid vehicles, alternate materials and concepts, sensors and embedded systems, infotonics to name a few.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of PESIT is one of the oldest departments of the institution and was started in the year 1988. The Department has an annual intake of 180 students presently, with alumni strength of over 3000 students, who can be found in the top notch companies and universities across the world.
